Raymond Chan and Ka-Sing Lau

Ka-Sing joined our Department in 1996， and was the Chairman for the first 16 years。 After stepping down as Chairman， KS still served in the Department for 6 more years before retiring back to the US。
KS was a very dedicated Chairman。 He worked in his office from 7：00 in the morning till 11：00 in the evening almost every day ——- except when he went for hiking with his friends on Sunday。 I‘m not sure if KS was the longest-serving chairman in the history of CUHK in terms of number of years he served。 However， if we count the number of hours he served， I am sure KS was the longest-serving chairman in the CUHK history。
When he assumed the Chairmanship in 1996， our Department was at the lowest point。 The student quota was cut from 80 to 50， and our research was not on track。 KS happened to be visiting our Department on sabbatical leave that year， and was convinced to stay as the Chairman of our Department by our former Vice Chancellor， Prof。 Charles Kao。 Working slowly against all odds， KS gradually brought our Department out of the abyss。
When he stepped down as the Department Chair， our programmes， especially the Math Enrichment Programme was the envy and model of other Departments in the University； and the research in the Department was one of the best， if not the best， in the region。 These all were the results of his dedicated work and devoted contribution to the Department， for which the Department and our colleagues are indebted。
His inspirational leadership and wonderful personality will forever remain in our hearts。 May he rest in peace！
